What is Kratos?

Kratos is a structured decision-support tool for faculty who want to use an AI tool in their course. It is part of the Coherense suite of tools, which help educators and institutions make defensible, evidence-based decisions in complex circumstances.

Kratos walks you through the ECET AI Framework (Ethical Choices in Educational Technology for Artificial Intelligence), developed by Grotewold, Warren, and Beck (2024) and grounded in international AI guidelines from the EU, UNESCO, SIAA, the US Department of Education, the Department of Defense, and the White House. The framework evaluates any AI tool across three bands: whether the tool supports your learning goals (Idea), whether it can realistically be implemented (Feasibility), and whether using it is ethically sound (Ethics).

This tool also captures your pedagogical plan using the ECET ID framework, so the review committee can see not just what tool you want to use, but exactly how and why you plan to use it with your students. Your ECET AI score is calculated automatically. When you finish, you can download a complete PDF report or save your progress as a file and return to it later.

How long will this take?
Plan for 45 to 90 minutes total. The ECET AI review requires you to research the tool before answering, which takes most of that time. You can save your progress and return later.
📄
What do I need before I start?
Access to the tool itself (a free account or trial), the tool's privacy policy and terms of service, and 30 minutes of hands-on use. Do not complete this based on marketing materials alone.
📈
How is the score used?
Your average score across 18 items (1-10 scale) is reviewed by the instructional technology committee. Scores below 6.0 require a consultation with an instructional designer before approval.
💾
Can I save and come back?
Yes. Use "Save progress" in the sidebar at any point. This downloads a .json file to your computer. Use "Load saved progress" to resume exactly where you left off.
How to use Kratos: step by step
1
Read this introduction completely before you begin.
Understanding the purpose of the review and what each section asks will make the process faster and your answers more accurate. Skipping ahead and guessing does not produce a useful evaluation.
2
Get hands-on access to the tool and spend time with it.
Create a free account or access a trial at the tool's website. Use it to complete an activity similar to what you plan to assign students. You need firsthand experience to answer the evaluation questions accurately.
3
Research the tool's privacy policy, terms of service, and educator documentation.
Before you begin Step 2 (ECET AI review), look up the tool's privacy policy and any FERPA compliance documentation. Search: [tool name] + "privacy policy" + "FERPA" or "education data." Note whether student work is used to train the AI model.
4
Work through the ECET AI review questions in order, from Idea through Ethics.
The framework is designed to be completed linearly. Each band builds on the previous one. Read the "How to research this" guidance under each question before selecting your score. Rate each item from 1 to 10 using the scale buttons. The score dashboard updates live.
5
Describe your pedagogical plan in Step 3.
Select your ECET ID integration model, the Bloom's taxonomy levels your use addresses, and describe exactly what students will do with the tool. Be specific. The review committee uses this section to evaluate whether your planned use is sound.
6
Review, certify, and submit in Step 4.
Check your complete submission, confirm the certification statement, and submit. You will receive a confirmation. Download the PDF report for your records. The review committee will contact you within 5 to 7 business days.
Returning to a previous session? Use Load saved progress in the left sidebar to restore your work from a saved .json file before clicking Begin.

Step 2 of 4 — ECET AI Framework (Grotewold, Warren & Beck, 2024)
Ethical review

Complete all four preparation steps before you rate anything. Then work through the 18 items in order. Your score updates automatically. Each item includes specific guidance on how to research your answer.

Required preparation before you begin scoring
1
Get hands-on access to the tool before answering any questions.

Create a free account or open the tool at its website. Spend at least 30 minutes using it in the way your students would. Do not rate based on marketing materials or secondhand descriptions.

If a paid tier is required, request a free trial or educator demo. Note any access barriers you encounter.
2
Read the privacy policy, terms of service, and any educator documentation.

Look for FERPA compliance statements, data retention and deletion policies, and whether student-submitted content is used to train AI models.

Search: [tool name] + "privacy policy" + "FERPA" or "education data" + "terms of service"
3
Search for independent educator reviews and any known controversies.

Look for Common Sense Media ratings, EdSurge reviews, published educator feedback, or peer-reviewed studies. Note any concerns about bias, student harm, or data misuse.

Search: [tool name] + "classroom review" or "educator feedback" or "student data" or "controversy"
4
Work through the 18 questions in order: Idea, then Feasibility, then Ethics.

The ECET AI framework is linear by design. Completing Idea first grounds your Feasibility answers. Both prepare you to evaluate Ethics with real context. Read each question's research guidance before scoring.

Average scores below 6.0 require an instructional design consultation before approval.
